Blink twice for help...

Something strange has gripped the residents of Douglas County, Oregon. One by one several people and even whole families have literally fallen down in what looks like a coma. It's horrifying for those untouched by the disease to see their loved ones fall beside them mid-word without any warning and without any discernible reason. It's much more terrifying for the victims, however, than anyone realizes because the victims aren't in a coma. They are fully conscious, aware of their surroundings, and able to do only two things on their own&emdash;breathe and blink. They have Locked In Syndrome, a kind of living death in which they can see, hear, taste and feel, but cannot even twitch their nose.

Senior Public Health Nurse Nancy Brandauer has the task of finding out what happened to these people and what will bring them out of it before their condition becomes irreversible. Her quest is motivated by something much deeper than her commitment to her profession, great though that is. Her motivation springs from the very core of her soul because her only daughter is one of the victims.

Into the midst of this emotional whirl, the Centers for Disease Control drops someone to "help."  Her first love, Zachary Keller, a man from whom the parting was not sweet, but bitter, unresolved, and for which Nancy feels a certain guilt. Happily married now for many years, she draws strength from her husband Ed, even as he draws strength from her. Their bond is as unassailable as any couple's can be, but it faces a rapid succession of challenges that will test its temper as nothing has before.

Locked In twists and turns, going where you least expect it. Just when you think you've rounded the last turn and worked everything out, it tosses you another surprise&emdash;right up to the very last page.

How to get your FREE eBook download

You will need the appropriate free eReader application for the machine on which you plan to read the book. Click here to go to the eReader site for the latest version for the handheld device or computer on which you want to read it. eReader has versions for most popular smart phones and computer platforms.

Click here to download your free copy of Locked In for eReader for Palm OS.

Here's how to download Breathe Not the Sins of Others or Locked In or both novels directly into your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Other handheld devices that have been modeled on the iPhone may have eReader apps that can download eReader .pdb files directly into them. If so, these instructions may work for them as well. You'll just have to see if the eReader app you installed has this capacity and give it a try, following the instructions it should have in its manual.

    1. Install eReader on your iPhone or iPod Touch, if you don't already have it installed. You can do this through iTunes App Store the same as you would any other app. The app is a free download.
    2. Open eReader on your iPhone or iPod Touch and press the + button in the lower right corner.
    3. Press the eReader/Fictionwise shelf button. This brings up a login page.
    4. Enter dightonbooks@schoolmarmwood.org where is says "eReader login email address"
    5. Enter "books1844" (without quotes) where it says "eReader login password"
    6. Press the GO button
    7. A "Get Books" window will open with Breathe Not the Sins of Others and Locked In listed.
    8. You will see that the author is shown as "Personal Content." eReader.com automatically assigns "Personal Content" as the author to all files in this list, regardless of who is listed in the file's information code as author. You can change this after downloading the book. (See below)
    9. To download either book, press it and then press the Download button in the new screen's upper right corner. The screen will roll back to the list and show a green dot with a checkmark in it next to the title. Do not touch the screen or any buttons! The download is not complete until a window appears telling you that it has finished.
    10. Press the OK button.
    11. To download the other novel, repeat steps 9 and 10 for that title.
    12. Unfortunately, the eReader.com upload protocol for personal content files overwrites the original author information encoded in the book's file and there is, at this time, no way to prevent it from doing so. The information on copyright, publisher, etc. remains untouched. Once you have completed downloading either or both novels, press the Books button in the upper left corner. Find the novel you want to open and press it. The book will open. You can now edit, if you wish, the eReader information on the novel by pressing the "I" button in the upper right corner, then the Edit button in the upper right corner of the new screen that appears. This will allow you to change the author from "Personal Content" to Stephen D. Dighton, assign it to a category (we suggest "Suspense" for Breathe Not the Sins of Others and "Mystery" for Locked In), remove the .pdb from the title, add a description and change the book cover graphic, by deleting the text in the cover section and leaving it blank. eReader will pick a generic cover at random from its library of covers and assign it to the novel.
    13. Open your new book and start reading and enjoying.
