A FREE eBook Novel of Suspense

At the beginning of her shift, Paula Rose McKenzie RN asks herself why she's still working nights in the county jail after twenty-five years. She could have retired a year ago to tend her garden and travel with her husband. Yet, here she is giving CPR to someone most people would say doesn't deserve the time of day, much less a second chance at life.

During the next--and worst--three days of her life, she will question her decision to stay with ever-increasing wonder as she deals with two suicides and one attempt, accusations of negligence, a Grand Jury investigation, and a new, irrationally hostile boss. For support and assistance, she turns to her husband and their Bahá'í community. Their counsel helps her deal with all the turmoil that surrounds her, but they cannot help her on her fourth and final day when she can only hope her skill as a nurse and the lessons taught her by the Bahá'í Faith will keep her alive.

Breathe Not the Sins of Others introduces something new to the suspense genre--faith. Its heroine is an ordinary person with no unusual skills who does the most exceptional things in the most extraordinary circumstances--she prays and lives by the rules, even when doing so may mean her death.

Unsolicited Reviews

Absolutely loved Breathe Not the Sins of Others. Thank you. Will be ordering your other book soon. You did a wonderful job of placing a Baha'i woman in the midst of a realistic and degrading world and having her character prevail.... I couldn't put it down. --Shane B.

I received my order from you on Wednesday; many thanx for the prompt shipment. But I do have a 'complaint' to make: I started reading "Breathe Not the Sins..." last night and stayed up until 1 a.m. finishing it. That's not fair, Steve, when I had to get up at 5:00 a.m. for the Fast!!!--Virginia H.

NOTE: At one time we were able to offer the print version of Breathe Not the Sins of Others for less than the onlline publisher did. That is no longer the case, so we encourage those of you who want a print version (trade paperback) to order it directly from Xlibris.

How to get your FREE eBook download

You will need the appropriate free eReader application for the machine on which you plan to read the book. Click here to go to the eReader site for the latest version for the handheld device or computer on which you want to read it. eReader has versions for most popular smart phones and computer platforms.

Here's how to download Breathe Not the Sins of Others or Locked In or both novels directly into your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Other handheld devices that have been modeled on the iPhone may have eReader apps that can download eReader .pdb files directly into them. If so, these instructions may work for them as well. You'll just have to see if the eReader app you installed has this capacity and give it a try, following the instructions it should have in its manual.

    1. Install eReader on your iPhone or iPod Touch, if you don't already have it installed. You can do this through iTunes App Store the same as you would any other app. The app is a free download.
    2. Open eReader on your iPhone or iPod Touch and press the + button in the lower right corner.
    3. Press the eReader/Fictionwise shelf button. This brings up a login page.
    4. Enter dightonbooks@schoolmarmwood.org where is says "eReader login email address"
    5. Enter "books1844" (without quotes) where it says "eReader login password"
    6. Press the GO button
    7. A "Get Books" window will open with Breathe Not the Sins of Others and Locked In listed.
    8. You will see that the author is shown as "Personal Content." eReader.com automatically assigns "Personal Content" as the author to all files in this list, regardless of who is listed in the file's information code as author. You can change this after downloading the book. (See below)
    9. To download either book, press it and then press the Download button in the new screen's upper right corner. The screen will roll back to the list and show a green dot with a checkmark in it next to the title. Do not touch the screen or any buttons! The download is not complete until a window appears telling you that it has finished.
    10. Press the OK button.
    11. To download the other novel, repeat steps 9 and 10 for that title.
    12. Unfortunately, the eReader.com upload protocol for personal content files overwrites the original author information encoded in the book's file and there is, at this time, no way to prevent it from doing so. The information on copyright, publisher, etc. remains untouched. Once you have completed downloading either or both novels, press the Books button in the upper left corner. Find the novel you want to open and press it. The book will open. You can now edit, if you wish, the eReader information on the novel by pressing the "I" button in the upper right corner, then the Edit button in the upper right corner of the new screen that appears. This will allow you to change the author from "Personal Content" to Stephen D. Dighton, assign it to a category (we suggest suspense for Breathe Not the Sins of Others and Mystery for Locked In), remove the .pdb from the title, add a description and change the book cover graphic, by deleting the text in the cover section and leaving it blank. eReader will pick a generic cover at random from its library of covers and assign it to the novel.
    13. Open your new book and start reading and enjoying.
