Schoolmarm Wood Publications is located near the historic town of Oakland, Oregon on ten forested acres that also serve as the family home. The property was named Schoolmarm Wood for several superb "schoolmarmed" Douglas fir specimen trees that reside in its forest. The estimated ages of these trees range from 20 to 80+ years, the largest having a chest high circumference of over 8 feet. An old logging term, a schoolmarm tree is one whose normal single trunk has split into two trunks. Loggers traditionsally disliked cutting these trees because it was very difficult to predict how they would fall, making them much more dangerous to the tree cutter. Even with modern techniques and tools, these trees remain the bane of loggers. How the term originated and where it came from is unknown.

Below is a short tour of Schoolmarm Wood, beginning at the entrance. Around here they say, "If you don't like the weather, just wait a bit." In one day, we've had rain, hail, snow, and bright sun.

Schoolmarm Wood is home to a lot of wildlife (other than the human residents) such as deer, raccoons, bobcats, lynx, and a black bear that was reported roaming around several years ago. As you can see, it is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy God's bounty. It has also proven to be an ideal environment to create the products we publish. Visitors are welcome anytime we're home. Just drop us an email to let us know when you expect to arrive. |
