ARCHIVE for Handheld devices
ARCHIVE for Handheld Devices (AHD) has been upgraded to include support for the iPhone and iPod Touch (OS 3.0) utilizing eReader, the same book reader we used for Palm OS. The method of importing ARCHIVE's books to the iPhone/iPod, though, is quite different from that used for Palm OS. This is because the iPhone OS 3.0 required a new method by eReader.
To import for the Palm OS: just download the entire AHD file. You can then use the standard HyperSync method for installing new files. If your Palm handheld has a memory card, you can load the entire ARCHIVE library on it. It's only 16 MB. The eReader program can then be directed to where you have saved the ARCHIVE files and open them.
To import to the iPhone/iPod:
- Install eReader on your iPhone or iPod Touch, if you don't already have it installed. You can do this through iTunes App Store the same as you would any other app. The app is a free download.
- Open eReader on your iPhone or iPod Touch and press the + button in the lower right corner.
- Press the eReader/Fictionwise shelf button. This brings up a login page.
- Enter archive@schoolmarmwood.org where is says "eReader login email address"
- Enter archive1844 where it says "eReader login password"
- Press the GO button
- A "Get Books" window will open with all the books in ARCHIVE listed.
- Press the "Title" button at the bottom of the screen to sort the books alphabetically. The "Author" botton will not work because eReader.com automatically assigns "Personal Content" as the author to all files in this list, regardless of who is listed in the file's information code as author. You can change this after downloading the book. (See below)
- To download a single title, press it and then press the Download button in the new screen's upper right corner. The screen will roll back to the list and show a green dot with a checkmark in it next to the title. Do not touch the screen or any buttons! The download is not complete until a window appears telling you that it has finished.
- Press the OK button in the Download is Complete window.
- If you want to download the entire library at one time, you can press the icon (a book with an arrow pointing down) in the upper right corner of the Get Books screen. You will get a warning that this may take a while which is an immesnse understatement. We recommend trying this only if you can allow the download to run all night. Out tests indicate that it will take upwards of four hours to download the entire library with a good high speed connection and closer to six hours with an average connection. If you decide to go ahead anyway, press the OK button. Otherwise press the Cancel button and select the book you want to download.
- Unfortunately, the eReader.com upload protocol for personal content files overwrites the original author information encoded in the book's file and there is, at this time, no way to prevent it from doing so. The other information is untouched. Once you have completed downloading a book (or the entire library), press the Books button in the upper left corner. Find a title you want to open in the list and press it. The book will open. You can now edit, if you wish, the eReader information on the book by pressing the "I" button in the upper right corner, then the Edit button in the upper right corner of the new screen that appears. This will allow you to change the author from "Personal Content" to the correct author, assign it to a category, remove the .pdb from the title, add a description, and change the cover graphic by simply deleting the text in the Cover section and leaving it blank. eReader will pick a generic cover graphic at random from its library of covers and assign it to the book.
